sound collage // 2017

The piece explores the narrator v. content complex in which the story itself competes for attention with the narrator of the story. The binary code recited throughout the piece is the narrator of this “story” and once translated from binary into the English language, a full, direct story is legible. The defense for utilizing binary as the language in which the narrator speaks is reference to the formulatic nature of contemporary storytelling.

The narrator and the “story” itself presented in 01010100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01001110 01100001 01110010 01110010 01100001 01110100 01101111 01110010 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01000110 01110010 01100001 01110101 01100100 are not necessarily a part of the same stories but are rather 2 conflicting stories that are woven together in order to falsely coerce the listener into believing the narrator is the “true” narrator when it is actually a false narrator - a false guide, someone attempting to pull away from the focus of the true story (being the rest of the composition other than the narrator). The overall piece is a commentary on the formula utilized in creating stories. Both the narrator’s story and the true story were formulated using story generating websites. The true story had input in the story generation from the artist in order to affirm that this is the true story that is meant to be told while the narrator’s story was entirely randomly generated and serves as a distraction from the true story.
